Christmas WIPS

This is my first mobile post, so no doubt the format will look ridiculous!

I took a bunch of days off for Christmas, and two days in I became ill, what the hell?! I'm starting to feel better, just in time for Christmas day. May Santa, and not Krampus, visit you tonight!

I have managed to refine a few drawings ready for painting over the coming days, here's some WIP pics.

New Paintings and a Print

Hey all, yey it's nearly Christmas!

This blog is well overdue some serious TLC, if you didn't know I also have a tumblr now, windigoheart.tumblr.com - I'm updating that pretty frequently with stuff - mainly straight from instagram, follow me if you have it, my username is theaschultheiss

Anyway, I have been a little bit productive, here's two recent paintings and their in progress IG shots:

I call this one "Ruby Ring"

He's about 8 x 10", watercolour and ink, well it's liquid acrylic actually, which by the way is beautiful to work with, like watercolour but so RICH.

The second one is this little beast, and yes, "Little Beast" is his official name too! He's also 8 x 10", liquid acrylic and ink on Fabriano watercolour paper.

I have made a limited run of 18 prints of this which are available in my Etsy store. They are giclée on 300gsm Hahnemuhle Sugar Cane Paper, the paper size is 8 x 10" and the border is approx. 2cm. Look how lush they are!

I also got these sweet little iPhone cases made, eeeeee!!!

Oh dear blog reader how I have shamed thee with my pathetic absence. Please accept all apologies!

Enough of that. What have I been up to, well not a lot really - I'm slowly working on getting my "studio" room cleared and decorated so I can get down to some serious art business. I've got so many paintings lined up, I know if I don't do them soon the inspiration that brought on their ideas will evaporate. I've done the odd sketcheroo, which I've posted to IG (Instagram) here's a few shots.

It was my birthday in June, and my amazing man got me the bestest prezzies ever in the form of two, yes TWO Chet Zar prints! One of them a firm favourite "I Want You" and the other "Runt" which I'd never seen before. I'm always amazed at how Mr Zar can create so many conflicting emotions within you. It simply astounds me. I'm ordering these bad boys some frames today and I'll have pics once their hung in my newly decorated art room.

Just to top it all off he also got me an awesome lightbox which is going to get some serious abuse, yep you guessed it, once the room is done! So because he's just too good for me, do me a favour, if you like alt rock / grungy music check out his band - Karmarosa link on the right - and if he asks, say I sent you because he's so good at Birthday gifts!

I like bloggers that leave you with a music video, I'm going to try and do this from now on. I'll start with a little Karmarosa clip - they are due to record their first official video soon, so this'll have to do for now, still, I think it's rocking considering it's just a snippet.

The Big Dipper, also known as the Plough or the Saptarshi. I took this from the garden after some failed attempts at photographing the moon through our telescope. Think I need to do some more research into things I do not understand like "focal length"! Though I was quite pleased with these, I think both were approximately 30 seconds shutter speed.

Is that a little shooting star in the first?! The second has an airplane.

New Mash: Sept - Dec

Let's be honest, I'm not very good at this am I?! Especially keeping up with all the little stuff. So the following is a mash up of various little things from Sept to Dec '10 and maybe a bit of January '11 too!

In September....

… I received my copy of the Mail Me Art book - and I was thrilled to see my little piece made it to the pages!

…. and I re-designed my site. I'm now using the Cargo platform and so far really liking it. Click the picture to check it out, feedback always welcome : )

In October...

…. had a day trip to London and got tattooed by the lovely and super talented Denver based Sandi Calistro, whilst doing a two day guest spot at the incredible Jayne Doe.

…. later that day I met up with a friend from school I'd not seen since we left 10 years ago! Pia Sukanya is a singer, actress and soon to be director. Yep, one of those, sickeningly multi-talented and gorgeous to look at!

In November...

.... I bought my very first piece of original art from the amazing N C Winters. It's called Memento no.3 and is from his recent solo show, Damages. This is so amazing up close, the detail is extraordinary, it's a like a little jewel.

… I also bought a super print from Australian illustrator Rik Lee. Check out his new web store, I have to say my print came way faster than I expected, so big shout out to Rik for his amazing art and excellent service!

Going to do a post on my own art collection soon, so will save photos of these till then.

In December...

.... I made this little fella, joint birthday and Christmas present for my dad. Yep, joint present, bloody cruel aren't I?!

So far in January...

... The newly formed band my man is in, Karmarosa, had their debut gig @ The Racehorse in Northampton last night. It was rocking and a wicked night all round. This morning I was paying the price a bit.

If you like a bit of alternative rock / grunge, go check them out and "like" them on Facebook. That always sounds weird doesn't it, go like them?! Right now they've just got a few rough demos but are planning to record in the next couple of months. They've not been together long so I'm really excited for them since last night seemed to go pretty bloody good, hopefully plenty more nights like that for them to come. Loads of respect for the amazing Joykill whom Karmarosa were supporting and for organising the whole thing.

Stalker & In the End Prints

Hello readers!! I hope the cold weather setting in is not getting you down too much, that is of course unless you're lucky enough to reside in milder climates. Perhaps you could send some sunshine my way?! Failing that, I'll just have myself a cup of tea.

I'm contemplating doing some short runs of my Stalker and In the End drawings as prints.

They'll probably be only very limited runs, maybe 10 of each. Size will be 9 x 7 inches, priced at £12 each or £20 for the pair, bargain! I thought they worked quite nicely together which is why I want to offer that option.

Please let me know if you are interested so I can formalize a run size. Will be limited edition so not to be produced again. Print size is approx 90% of the original drawings.

Haubrick Print

Look what I got today in the post, all the way from the US of bloody A... a wicked print by the super talented Tom Haubrick. I love his style, it's dark yet romantic. He uses a lot of black ink and watercolor by the looks of it, but don't quote me on that, it could all be ink of some description.

If you don't know Tom you're missing out. He's both an talented illustrator and exceptional tattoo artist.

Check out his website HaubsComix and Etsy store full of more goodness like the one above, all at super reasonable prices, might I add?! Oh, and he's got a blog, that he updates pretty regularly and a Facebook page.

Unfortunately it's unvarnished in this shot - as I varnished it last minute before packing - not recommended! Varnishing always seems to bring everything together more; makes the blacks blacker and colours pop. Oh well, you get the idea.

Sadly I was unable to attend because of work commitments but I hear the opening was a huge success.

Tina Ziegler of the amazing Hunt and Gather blog, author of the book of the same name and manager and curator of London Miles Gallery was in attendance and wrote a lovely post on her blog with a couple of great pictures. Feast your eyes.

Decked - The Making Of

I hope you had a very pleasant Friday the 13th?!

Now that the Decked 2010 exhibition is upon us I thought I'd share a bit of my process with you. Painting on a deck was all new to me - painting on wood itself isn't, but wrangling with the curvy board was a nightmare - it has a tendency to roll about, not good!

The initial idea was formed on a post-it note, of course. Sorry I don't have a picture of it right now. Basically I used my "In the End" drawing as the central focus and elaborated on that. At the time I drew it I was in two minds whether to add more or not. So thought this was the perfect opportunity to do that.

Firstly, sanding the varnish off the back of the deck I bought. Coco wasn't really being much help at all:

I transferred the drawing to the deck from a blown up print out of the original. I managed to get round the problem of the board rolling about by using a bean bag as support:

Completed drawing before (left) and after two layers of clear gesso and a light sanding (right). You can see that you don't loose too much definition of the drawing. I use Liquitex clear gesso, but it's very toothy so I lightly sand it back to get a smoother surface:

I'm pretty slack at getting progress shots of the painting stages - I don't really like the way the first layers of paint look and I don't tend to photograph stuff I find ugly!

Here's two detail previews - I'll post the whole deck once the show has officially opened.

Oh and not forgetting, Van's sponsored the show this year and donated 15 pairs of Chukkas. I was one of the lucky ones to get a pair. My design is fairly simple compared to some of the offerings, but I'm rather enjoying their cleanliness. This was my first pair of shoes, so I took it pretty cautiously! Freaking stylish I reckon!

I did really liked doing both the deck and the Vans, definitely going to do more of both in the future.

Summer of Skulls

This summer is turning out to be a particularly fine one. I'm still transparently white, but I'm not opposed to that!

Here's a new drawing I finished a week or so ago but have only just got round to scannning. I liked the simplicity, also totem aspect to it, I nearly added flowers and undergrowth but I might save that for another piece. You might say that the rabbit represents the entire animal kingdom, and the skull, all of humankind. But I'll let you decide.

Forever and (N)ever

I'm really excited to reveal the piece I've been working on lately.

This is the cover illustration for the artwork of Tim's upcoming album Forever and (N)ever. Tim is a singer songwriter, his music is honest, raw and beautiful. He plays acoustic guitar, and piano on a couple of the tracks.

The Last Unicorn Art Show - Opening Night

It was a huge success, with 400 or more visitors through the doors on the night. Peter S Beagle and his manager Connor were in attendance and apparently thoroughly enjoyed it. Well done Jeremy!

White Rabbit & Mushroom

I have something really cool to share today. About a month ago I was contacted through Etsy by a girl who had seen my White Rabbit and Mushroom print for sale (above). Her message was really sweet and she was asking my permission to have the image tattooed!! To say I was thrilled and excited and honored is a bit of an understatement. Most of my favorite artists on the planet have a page on their sites dedicated to tattoos of their artwork permanently inked into people's skin. To think that someone wanted one of my creations, with them... yep, for the rest of time, just blew me away.

Anyway, I emailed her back to let her know that I was very happy for her to use my design, with one rule... she send me a photo when it was done!

Despite my excitement, I guess at the back of my mind I thought I probably wouldn't hear from her again. People are always coming across stuff that would make a great tattoo, but most of those are rarely realized in skin, probably because too much time passes and it's forgotten about or something else comes up.

So you can imagine my UTTER DELIGHT when I read my emails this morning and found this:

WOW WOW WOW!! I love how the tattooist "traditionalized" the design a bit and added their own style - I think it's looks really cool! I can't stop looking at it, and it's seriously made my day, maybe my month! I don't know the name of the artist - but if I find out I'll let you know.

I'd like to say thanks to Aubrianne a.k.a. WickedClean, firstly for getting my artwork tattooed on you! And secondly for being so well mannered by asking first! And that's probably some pretty sound advice for anyone thinking about getting a tattoo of someone's art - yes, they'll most likely be honored, and likely to say yes, but don't assume that's how they'll feel. Go ahead and email them, ask them... if they say no, you'll have just to accept it, it's their intellectual property after all. If they say yes, GREAT - just be sure you send them a photo!!

Hope you had a nice Easter... two weeks late right?! I had an amazing ELEVEN days off work. I didn't get alot of art done as we were DIYing instead but I did do this little ditty inspired by Easter-ness, no Jesus though, only bunnies and eggs.

I had a lot of fun with this, it was a bit of an exercise in trying to keep the colour palette pastely and light... I usually have trouble holding back from slapping on the colour pretty much neat. I also loathe attempting symmetry - in retrospect I should have traced it. One rabbit is waaaay bigger than the other.... what? You hadn't noticed?!

I tried to incorporate my favorite elements from the story; in the border on the right is the castle, below is the Red Bull, above is the singing moth she encounters on her journey and to the left is her home forest. I wanted to incorporate more, like the witch, the unicorn as her human self and other characters but I thought it was simpler and better balanced like this.

I'll upload some of my process shots (which are of course still on my camera). Most of my original ideas and colour combos were excluded from the final piece and this was my second attempt, the first looked more like my sketch book studies - but it was destroyed in a fit of frustration! I'm pleased though because it resulted in this second one which I'm much happier with.

I'm hoping to get a hold of some opening night photos, as I obviously won't be attending, and put them up after the opening - because frankly I just can't wait to see all the art together! Should be a truly spectacular and varied event.

Yey! January's pieces from the Mail Me Art project finally got posted online… the response was so massive it's taken the poor and very patient people of Mail Me Art several months to sort, and I presume photograph, all the mail.

Was very thrilled to see my piece in amongst them and chuffed to see they photographed both sides.

Then I looked a little closer, and what's this?! What the hell? I was expecting the top right corner to be adorned with a rather vintage looking Royal Mail ink stamp… guess the ink at the Royal Mail was running low that day so they just handed out CHARCOAL instead! I mean come on, I paid a POUND and all I get is a huge strike through pencil mark?! I think I deserve a stamp don't you?! Ah, I knew some crap would happen. Still, at least he got there. I quite like the battered corners though, they have a certain appeal.

Decked is the culmination and celebration of skateboarding and art:

"The Decked Project is a fine and dandy collection of artists / illustrators / designers / tattoo artists and generally ink-stained fellows. The first exhibition was held at Stolenspace gallery in London in 2009 and will be back by popular demand in August 2010 at The Coningsby Gallery, London."

Same idea, more great stuff. And guessy what?! I'm painting a deck for it!! Better get my move on, groove on! I'm properly excited to have been accepted!

The show runs from 15th-29th August at Coningsby Gallery, 30 Tottenham Street, London.

Decked is the creation of illustrator Vicky Newman and is organized by her together with EJ Miles and David Bain.

I've always held my pencil/pen/brush differently from people I see around me. I thought I was weird. Really weird. Until the other day.

I popped over to Sketch Theater, to check out the super Brandi Milne's first video on there, which is truly divine and whilst watching noticed that she holds her pencil the same way!! A thumb and TWO fingertips on the barrel! Hell yeh, take that all you pencil holding conformists! So, I'm not the only one, and guess what, Brandi is an insane artist, so I guess the pencil technique can't be all that bad!

Go check out Brandi's page on Sketch Theatre (she just added a second video to the site). I adore the videos, it feels very nearly pervy watching people work! It's great. I also love being able to see an entire work of art being created in super quick time. I've been inspired and Tim's album artwork is also being filmed, and I'll upload it here when it's done.

So who's gonna join me and Brandi in the "It-takes-More-Than-One-Finger-and-One-Thumb-to-Grip-a-Pencil Club"?! We need members!

The Last Unicorn Art Show @ The Tattoo Factory Gallery, Chicago, IL is curated by the awesome Jeremy Scheuch and is in honor of the book The Last Unicorn by Peter S Beagle.

When I first heard about the show I hadn't read the book, so I bought a copy hoping it would spark some inspiration and seven pages later I had applied for the show!

I'm still reading the book (yeh, I'm a slow reader!) but I've already started on my piece, the book had one particular concept that really struck a cord, and it's the basis of my painting (more on that soon).

Musical Goodness from Tim George

I'm very excited to announce that my beloved, Tim George is releasing his first official album later this year and that he has asked me to do the cover artwork for it!!

I have been busy with ideas, making him a fan page, and he's been finalising the track listing and liaising with the CD manufacturer... we are both dead excited! Should be ready in May to buy and a little later for download on iTunes and Amazon. The album will consist of a whopping 15 tracks of his more mellow, acoustic goodness.

In the mean time you can check him out on his Reverbnation page, or over on the Facebook fan page, and yey perhaps become a fan!

I didn't make any *resolutions* this year, I like things that are bad for me far too much! So instead I have decided to set myself a ~~unobtainable~~ goal... it might seem wildly pathetic compared to some of the goals I have heard artists set themselves already this year, but here goes.

Being that there 52 weeks in the year (I think, I haven't actually checked), there are therefore 52 weekends, seeing that this is the time I tend to make stuff I have set myself the goal of 52 works of art, at least, for 2010.

The rules are:

- They must be finished works
- No sketches or doodles, however bloody lovely they are
- It must be a drawing, painting or other "craft", snap-happy photos do not count
- I must try and complete one a week, not none for three weeks then four shit ones all at once
- If I'm not happy with it, it doesn't count - no making up the numbers with mediocre mindlessness

There, it's *public* so now I got to stick to it!

On another note, no bunny-bird in the post tonight, far too much white stuff on the ground, plus side is I get to keep him for one more night! Oh, he is counting as one of the 52, is that fair?! Yeh, course it is, I really like him! I can see these rules being bent already...

I have devised a plan to help me let go of stuff, and by stuff I mean art.

I can't take credit for the plan, Mail Me Art is a project now in it's second year, whereby artists send work in by post, there's a monthly winner and a show at the end - last year there was also a book published from 200 of the best offerings.

The TWIST? The ground for the work is the envelope you send, be it a tube, packet or whatever takes your fancy, that is the canvas and you just pop it in the post - the fact that there is the potential for them to get scuffed up in the system is apparently all part of it, so much so that you are NOT ALLOWED to put it in another envelope. Seriously masochistic isn't it?!

I'd been meaning to send something since I heard about it last year - and then recently it dawned on me, I'll be killing two birds with one hefty blow; I get to submit to a really cool project whilst at the same time learning to let go of stuff, in a seriously hardcore-letting-go type of way. I'll remain safe in the knowledge that this little guy is most likely gonna get stomped on at the sorting office, probably dropped in a puddle, or worse, dog shit... I KNOW WHERE YOU LIVE POSTIE!! Ok, no I don't.

So here's my thingymajig, I call him Birdie-Bun... or something. He's got him some coloured pencil and watercolour on a home-made Arches paper envelope. He's going in the letter box tomorrow...

Note the excessive-wishful-thinking postage...

They are open for submissions until the end of this month.. so go get doodling (or creating a Renaissance masterpiece) on an envelope! Hell yeh.... I can feel myself detaching (and slowly unravelling?)

Over the festive period I did actually get around to doing a few creative things, in between the copious amounts of food and fun!

Here's the Christmas card I ended up making from my original graphite drawing.

It's printed on my six-colour Epson in duotone red - as I figured the black and white was a bit too macabre for Christmas! Little robin got a good reception from all who received him, even by my Nan who I thought wouldn't be too enamored by the plight of the wormy!

I also had a bit of a play around combining coloured pencil and watercolour in a couple of new pieces. Usually for things like this I outline in pen, like my Anima Femina drawings, but I like the quality that the pencil outline gave here, much softer - maybe more forgiving...

Below are some initial sketches, progress and completed shots. Photos are a bit naff - can't be bothered to scan them right now.

Materials are Derwent Coloursoft pencils and Dr PH Martins watercolours, on Somerset printmaking paper.

I actually did this for a show of the same theme at Pop Revolution Gallery, Mason, OH. But I'm in two minds whether to submit it or not. I think I like it too much to part with it; this has always been my problem, it's like sending your babies out into the world alone! Eeeek, what should I do?

This is well over due... while I've been yakking about other stuff I haven't posted any of my own art in a while... so here's some new drawings, I say new, I did them about a month or so ago.

I used two mediums I don't usually combine - pen and CP (coloured pencil - come on, get with the lingo!).

I guess these are inspired by the the female form, tattoo art and, mmm now lets see, desperation? Could be.

Good News For Bunnies

Not art related, but critter related, and my love for animals makes me very happy to hear the following news I received in an email newsletter today from the Dr Hadwen Trust for Humane Research:

"The DHT welcomes news that non-animal methods to replace the 65 year old Draize rabbit test for severe eye irritancy, have finally achieved international acceptance. Thousands of rabbits will now be spared procedures where chemical substances, including for household products and cosmetics, are applied to their eyes. The DHT funded the vital early-stage research work in the 1980s that has now resulted in one of the replacement methods approved."

I have no idea what's come over me recently, but I've started to take a keen interest in investing in other people's art work and hanging it on my walls - as if you're meant to do anything else with it.

I guess it started with winning Brandi Milne's "pair of twos" - I was elated to have in my possession lovely work by someone other than myself... errr did that sound vain? It really wasn't meant like that... oh hell, you know what I mean!

So, my recent purchases are these prints from tattoo artist RabbitAbby's Etsy shop...

They are reproductions of her flash inspired pen and watercolours - just gorgeous. She's an amazing artist and an incredible tattooist, go check out her site and be in awe at how good she is after what is considered a pretty short time in the industry.

Oh yeh, and I wish I never joined Etsy - I want to buy everything, and I mean EVERYTHING on there!!

Next up is this exquisite and wonderfully dark, but colorfully ironic piece from Ana Bagayan entitled Prey.

It made me laugh so hard when I saw it, I thought "Hell yeh!! That's it, you go mousey!" - me and my intellectual thoughts! I guess that's the whole idea about art - whatever the viewer makes of it, right?!

Chet Zar is a beast, in the nicest possible sense of the word. I've been interested in his work for a while now, he paints what are at first, seemingly horrific creatures, that he describes as "modern humanity without it's masks, without the adornments that make us acceptable to whatever group we are a part of" - and when you know that, you look a little deeper - and it's even more terrifying! I adore his style, his palette and technique.

I've only just realized he has his own online shop... I am sooo tempted... The Dance is probably my favorite piece of his... it would have to go somewhere well placed in my house, so as not to stumble across it during a dark night and crap my pants. Chet also has a blog, check it out here.

I've been meaning to update it and as great as it is building and hosting it myself, it was time consuming because, let's face it, I'm not a techy, I never have time, and blah blah blah - you get the picture!

So theazy.co.uk is going to die a death in Mid Aug when my hosting contract ends - awww, don't be sad!

And so for the new site, well I just love it, it's different, but it works great and is much simpler for me to update, so hopefully it will mean more time doing arty things and less time faffing about at the puter!

Pocketful Magazine - Issue 3

I am delighted to announce that Pockeful Magazine issue 3 was released this month... I've been a bit slack, I've actually had my copy for over three weeks now! Whoops!

Anyway, this issue's theme was "Draw Me a Sheep" and Selin the editor and creator was kind enough to agree that The Baabit fitted right in!

Pocketful is available on Amazon.com, also go check out the website, which has a page for every contributing artist. Selin does a marvelous job putting such a lovely publication together, so go gets your pockets full of Pocketful!

Brandi Milne's Pair of Twos

You may have read my previous shoutings about having won something in Brandi Milne's giveaway - well, I'm gonna do a bit more shouting right now because MY PRIZE ARRIVED!!!

Yesterday, all the way from across the big wide pond, arrived a little package straight from the hands of Brandi. Inside was my prize - two lovingly created, hand drawn playing cards, which Brandi calls A Pair of Twos. Each of the 10 pairs she made are unique, and each uber lucky recipient had no idea what their beautiful little pair would be - how cute and exciting is that?!

I was so thrilled that I had won, and I'm even more so now I have them, these bad boys are getting framed and hung in my abode to inspire and make me smile - I've never owned any original art (made by someone else!) before!

And just to top it off there were a couple of extra goodie treats included too... god, this girl is good to us! If you have no idea what I'm talking about, go read my earlier post, better yet, go check out Brandi and her art - it's truly lovely.

Oh and looky here - how lovely do they look framed?!

She's really inspired me, I want to do a giveaway too, giving is fun! What do you think?!

I WON SOMETHING!!

I've been really inspired by Brandi Milne recently, her beautiful work and instantly recognizable, almost retro-y style.

Anyway, the other day I was getting my daily fix of blogs and noticed she was doing a give away - didn't know what for then, she was very secretive! But what the hell, I entered by leaving a comment on her blog.... few days later, what do I know? I've WON!! Yep, me! Out of about 95 entries... how cool!

So for the prizes - She made 10 pairs of gorgeous little playing cards, pencil drawings, they are beautiful. I have no idea which pair I'll get, nor does she!

I'm so excited to get them in the post, I think this will be the first piece of original art by another artist I will have ever owned... and not just any old artist, Brandi Milne - who, I'll have you know, is really quite famous - check out her awesome work and blog here!

You can bet your bottom-recession-surviving-dollar I'll be letting you know all about my Pair of Twos after they wing their way into my awaiting arms! Yipeee!!

Hi-Fructose

I can't remember how it happened, but recently I discovered the amazing world of Hi-Fructose Magazine - a quarterly US publication founded by Annie Owens and Attaboy, this "under the counter culture" goodness is filled with visual delights... it is the type of thing you don't know you're looking for, until it finds you.

I bought the current issue, Vol. 10 in the UK, but even before it had arrived on my door mat I was hooked to it's whole philosophy and style - I was determined to seek out some of the highly sought after back issues, namely volumes 5 & 6 which feature some real inspirations for me.

I searched high and low - Hi-Fructose had sold out of their own stock long ago and most places that stocked it also had "SOLD OUT" slapped all over... and you can forget even attempting to pick up back issues in the UK... I was virtual shopping across the pond. There's the monster that is Ebay, but you are looking at $20ish an issue - yep, that's how good this thing is!

I eventually found Frozen Empire Toys - a New York company specializing in designer vinyl - and they had back issues 5, 6, 7, 8 & 9!!! Wooop!!

So here they are, my prized volumes 5, 6 & 9 - yeh ok, I will invest in 7 & 8 soon...

Vol. 11 is shipping in April and included in it's features is the stunning work of Mark Ryden.

So, many thanks to Frozen Empire Toys for an excellent service and ensuring I got my fix! I guess they just might have more back issues in stock - so long as I didn't pinch the last few.

I am thrilled to announce that me and my White Rabbits have been featured in the latest edition of Pocketful Magazine! If you have not heard of it, shame on you - let me explain...

Pocketful Magazine is a wonderful new bi-annual publication which endeavors to showcase artists that are little known, up-and-coming or have yet to be featured in more well known magazines. Selin, the founder and editor, aims to show off the hidden talent that lurks out there in the ether that is the internet. There is a blurb about the artist and at least one illustration from each, and also an in depth interview from one artist in each issue.

Pocketful can be purchased exclusively from Amazon.com (link) - I have put an order in for my three copies already!

Hopefully this will not be the first and last time I will be seen in the publication, I am working on my submission for issue 3, the theme of which is "Draw me a sheep"!

Long Time No Scribble

Just popping by after ages of not posting. I've moved house, hence the long absence, but things are settling down again and I'll be posting often again soon... once we have our not so broad broadband up and running.

Work has also slowed, if not stopped completely! But I've decided to start on a drawing a day sketchbook for 09, as inspired by Danny Gregory's Everyday Matters.

I'll be drawing an object, thing or some stuff each day, everyday, for as many pages as there are in the book. So feel free to post a subject matter for me to draw. Could be a piece of fruit, a stapler, a staircase.... something I might have in my field of vision on a day to day basis, and we'll see what happens and of course I'll be posting them... probably 7 at a time, once a week.

Francesco Mugnai is a blogger, he's a graphic design teacher at the Institute of Art in Florence - where I grew up, and where a lot of my friends went to school - bizarrely!

Anyway, he's got a great little blog and one of his features is the best 40 business cards of the month... I was scrolling through and was amazed to see mine featured - *mouth a gasp* - what an honor!

Some of the other business cards he has found are just jaw droppingly beautiful and it's started to get me thinking about future ones.

Anyway, I'd like to say thank you to Francesco for making my day, and please say "Ma che sei ganzo!" to Florence for me!

This is my entry for the House of Illustration "What are you Like?" competition, judged by none other than Quentin Blake, among others. The idea is to select from a list, a number of your favorite things, and illustrate them.

Mine are:

Clothes - woolly winter scarf

Place - bed!
Pastime - drawing
Possession - camera
Weather - dusky after the rain with rainbow

As is often the case it turned out dramatically different from what I had envisaged! But I am pleased with it all the same.

I've come across some crazy artist type people recently, their galleries, blogs and shops, here are just a few of my favorites that I thought I should share.... can't keep them to myself forever:

Szofita makes beautiful art, photography and jewellery, my favorite by far though is her snow dome type rings.... gorgeous!

Licorice Tree does mental things with felt... I'm not sure there's alot else I can say, except these creatures are fantastic, adorable and often a bit scary, eeeek!

Anthony Ventura is the creator of the Skullshire Girls, a group of mean, vindictive and down right slutty girls which he has created from his imagination... but the nice thing is that they are dark, in a good old fashioned grungy sort of way.

I made another order from Moo last week, and my lovely new cards came on Monday. Moo are renowned for their original minicards which I've had before but when they released exactly the thing which drove them to create the minicard (because they disliked the classic business card) how could I resist not joining in?!

I'm not disappointed, the quality is everything I expected and anyone lucky enough to meet me (?!) or purchase some work will have the pleasure of receiving one of these beauties too!

I'm waiting on the second part of my order, very cute stickers.

I wanted to share with you my love of Cult Pens. They are the only online store in the UK I have found that are solely dedicated to providing products which feed my addiction. I've ordered from them a few times and so far the service has been great. Don't fear... they do pencils too.

Are you going pen-cold-turkey? Well now you can get a fix through The Pen Addict. It's a great blog I discovered recently where they test and admire a whole host of pens on a regular basis. A good little gizmo for sussing out new pens when you can't get to a shop and test them all on that little strip of worn out paper - that must really annoy shop owners!

19th March? Was that my last post? Oh, dear poor show!

Well I had better get on then, firstly....

Theo at The Rabbit Retreat has officially launched her new site dedicated to her loving care of needy buns. She does such an amazing job looking after rabbits whose previous owners often couldn't care less... how she ever manages not to wipe out those ignorant souls is beyond me! She is a true angel.

Jay, an illusive web wizard, created this marvelous site for her to spread the word and I helped with the logo design and illustrations.
